(CBS News) Two former "American Idol" competitors returned to the stage during Wednesday's season finale, but not for the reason you'd expect.

Season five finalist Ace Young and season three runner-up Diana DeGarmo didn't sing for viewers - instead, they got engaged during the live show.

Before Phillip Phillips was declared this season's winner, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest called the couple to the stage.

The lights were dimmed, and Young, 31, said, "This has always been home to us and I felt that this would be the perfect place to ask a simple question."

He then got down on one knee, and continued, "We have conquered Broadway together. We have created our new music together. We have an amazing group of people around us. And with the help of David Webb jewelry, I have a way to make this last forever. Are you ready?

"I love you to death. You're my best friend. I want to make this last forever and I will do anything in my power to have the most ... amazing life together if you will have me. Diana Nicole DeGarmo, will you marry me?"

A tearful DeGarmo, 24, said yes.

The "Idol" competitors met in the spring of 2010, when they both appeared in the Broadway revival of the musical "Hair."
