A Workshop In Lovemaking

Golfing, swimming and bird-watching are not the only skills you can perfect while you're on vacation. CBS News Correspondent Tracy Smith reports Canyon Ranch has added sex to the list.

Dr. Lana Holstein believes that it's possible to teach lessons of love in a workshop setting.

And her women-only workshop is proving a big draw. Kerlin and Alison, two sisters, came to Canyon Ranch Health Resort to bond in the mountain breezes of the Berkshires. But they ended up sharing a lot more than fresh air and sunshine.

"We were walking along, and I said, I''m thinking of signing up for Magnificent Sex,' and Alison said, 'I am, too'!" says Kerlin.

They were among a group of women on hand for the lessons.

"Now, I know there's two things in the world you're never supposed to talk about. You're never supposed to talk about how much money you make. And you're never supposed to talk about your sex life. It was about two or three months ago in one of these circles, this woman said, 'I'll tell you how much money I make!'" says Dr. Holstein.

And so, in the company of 12 shoeless women, Smith included, Alison and Kerlin found themselves taking a workshop on sex.

"That's all my husband thinks about, is sex," says one participant.

"How do you keep the sensual fires burning?" asks Kerlin.

"We expect ourselves to be these expert lovers. We're supposed to be so skilled. And yet, who's taught us? Nobody's taught us," says Dr. Holstein.

According to recent statistics, 41 percent of women lack interest in sex and 33 percent don't have orgasms.

Alarming stats aside, at this luxurious resort, where sunshine and pampering are part of every day, it's easy to imagine that perfect sex is simple.

But reality often gets in the way.

"Frequency is a myth, isn't it?" asks Kerlin.

"He thinks he's being helpful. He'll say, don't you want to work out today?" says a woman named Alison. "I'd love to have sex, but I'm not so interested in doing what he wants to do," she adds.

While another one, Michelle Rosenberg, says she needs to sleep more than anything.

Dr. Holstein has a cure for every ailment. Sometimes, the prescription is for a business contract:

"Your going to cut a deal. All right? You say, 'I'll initiate sex once a week if you will...'" she suggests.

And for those tough cases, Dr. Holstein recommends a sensuous dance lesson of sorts. And she even has an anatomically correct puppet named Mona, who seems to be getting quite a reputation, even outside of class.

"I haven't met Mona. I'd like to meet Mona, see what she's about," says a man named Derek. Along with other men, he heads for the golf course while the wives go to study the art of making love.

"Sex is no mystery to me. It's life," says another man named Alan, and when asked he confirms he probably could teach the workshop, himself.

So what does Derek expect to happen that night?

"Hopefully, a lot of homework," he says.

This particular workshop was for women, but if you think you might like to polish your skills with a study-buddy, Dr. Holstein also teaches a four-day workshop for couples. And there are similar classes at other resorts around the country.
