Amoeba Music on the Sunset Strip
Independently-owned, Amoeba rose out of a community of music lovers who wanted to buy their music from more than a corporate chain store. Take a look, you can choose from thousands of albums.
The Village
You can't talk about LA's music scene without visiting The Village recording studio. Walk down the halls, and recording history surrounds you. Among artists who have recorded there include Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, The Beach Boys, Mariah Carey, Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Madonna and Rihanna. "The Shawshank Redemption," "Toy Story" and "The Hunger Games" are among the many movies that have been mixed in these sound studios.
Troubadour
Rolling Stone Magazine hails the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood as one of the best rock clubs in the U.S. Carole King, James Taylor, The Eagles, Van Morrison, Billy Joel and Joni Mitchell all cut their teeth inside this club. Elton John performed his first-ever U.S. gig here, introduced by Neil Diamond, who recorded his first live album here.
Viper Room
The Viper Room on the Sunset Strip was originally co-owned by Johnny Depp and quickly became a hot spot for Hollywood elite. Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio are all regulars. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed on this stage opening night, and the stage continues to launch careers, including Imagine Dragons. Most notably, River Phoenix died here of a drug overdose the same year it opened.
Whisky a Go Go
Hop a few doors down and you'll find yourself inside Whisky a Go Go, one of the first venues to popularize go-go dancing. It became the launching pad for bands including The Doors, Alice Cooper, Van Halen and Mötley Crüe. Whisky famously launched the career of Johnny Rivers and kept The Doors as a house band for years.
Sunset Marquis
We finish our tour inside one of Los Angeles' most-famous old rock 'n' roll hotels: the Sunset Marquis. Noted for its celebrity clientele, room rates here can exceed $2,500 a night. In 1995, Courtney Love left a suicide note in her room here after an alleged fight with Nine Inch Nails star Trent Reznor. We're inside the famed whisky bar inside the Sunset Marquis, Bar 1200. This exclusive bar is a hangout for models and celebrities. Robin Williams, U2 and Eminem all frequented this spot.
