Joran van der Sloot, who had long been the prime suspect in Natalee Holloway's 2005 disappearance, entered a plea deal with U.S. prosecutors in an extortion case stemming from the vanishing that received international attention.
Joran van der Sloot was charged in 2010 with trying to extort $250,000 from Natalee Holloway's mother Beth Holloway in exchange for information about her missing daughter's remains.
Joran Van der Sloot is not charged with killing Natalee Holloway, who was declared dead several years ago.
Joran van der Sloot has been transferred temporarily into U.S. custody from a Peruvian prison, where he's serving a 28-year sentence for another woman's murder.
