DAVIE (CBSMiami) – With just three days away from the Fourth of July, authorities want to remind the public of the risks and potential dangers associated with fireworks.
A demonstration was held Wednesday at the Broward Fire Academy that serves as a visual reminder of how powerful fireworks can be.
"It takes fingers, it takes hands, it takes eyes and it kills people," said Major Brandon Ball, a fire marshal.
Broward Sheriff's Office wants families to remain vigilant, and practice caution while doing fireworks this Independence Day.
"While sparklers are legal, fireworks are not in the State of Florida. If it makes a boom, or if it takes off, that's a firework. Those are not legal for consumer use," said Mike Jachles with Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.
BSO is still looking for the person responsible for detonating a firework in the hallway of a West Park apartment building. The firework, Jachles said, took out windows and doors and could have seriously injured, or killed, someone.
The bottom line, BSO says, is to leave the fireworks to the professionals.
