Video Shows Miami Gardens Officer Shooting

MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) – Newly released surveillance video obtained by CBS4 news partner, The Miami Herald, shows an alleged gunman lunging after a Miami Gardens officer while firing his gun in January.

The whole incident is captured on surveillance video from numerous cameras that are positioned around the apartment complex located at 2170 NW 183rd Street in Miami Gardens.

CBS 4 obtained the video from our news partners at the Miami Herald.

In that video, you can see Miami Gardens police officer Ryan Thompson going after a man in white shorts who has been involved in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend.

The video then captures the man lunge at Thompson.  Blindsided, he holds up his hands and is shot.

Next you see officers rush to help Thompson and apprehend the shooter.

"I saw the other officers had the guy on the ground with a gun to his head," a witness told CBS 4 News that night.

The shooter identified as Randy Thomas was shot three times but survived.

He is charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to witnesses, Thomas had been drinking that day when he threatened his fiance, Sabrina Modest with a gun.  Modest called 911.

CBS4 tried to speak to Modest on Friday about the incident.  She had little to say other than, she "thanks God she is alive."

Neighbor Helen Brown who was in her apartment the night of the shooting had nothing but good things to say about the suspect, Randy Thomas.

"I was surprised to hear what they were going through.  He is a nice man.  I've never seen him in any argument with anybody," said Thomas.

CBS 4 contacted the Miami Gardens police department for comment on how officer Thompson responded to the gunman.

"We cannot comment on an active internal investigation," said Detective Michael Wright.

Officer Thompson has been released from the hospital and is said to be in good condition.  He is expected to return to active duty.
