TAVERNIER (CBSMiami) – Not one, but two different groups of Cuban migrants made it to shore early Friday morning in the Florida Keys.
Sheriff's deputies got the first call around 5:00 a.m. where a group of migrants were found by the boat ramp at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier. When deputies arrived, they found 12 men in good condition but slightly dehydrated. Customs and Border Protection officers took custody of the men. The 15 foot long boat they arrived in was near the dock by the boat ramp.
Six hours later, at 11:00 a.m., a second call came in reporting a group of Cuban migrants on a small island offshore of Geiger Key. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded and transported a deputy to the island.
The 7 men on the island were all brought to shore. They were in good condition and were held until CBP could respond to take custody of them.
