Depression Strengthens Into Tropical Storm Gert

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A tropical depression that formed overnight has strengthened into Tropical Storm Gert and is becoming better organized over the western Atlantic ocean.

The system is not forecast to have a big impact on Florida. It's expected to remain east of the United States.

At 10:30 p.m., the center of the storm was located about 485 miles west-southwest of Bermuda.

It's moving to the north-northwest at about 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. A turn toward the north is forecast to occur overnight, followed by a turn toward the north-northeast by Monday night.

Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Gert could become a hurricane by Wednesday.

There are currently no watches or warnings in effect.
