Margate lightning strike kills mother and 2-year-old child during Sunday storm at Florida park, police say
A tragic lightning strike in Margate, Florida, has claimed the lives of a mother and her 2-year-old child.
The fatal lightning incident occurred Sunday afternoon, according to Margate Police, highlighting the dangers of severe weather in South Florida.
On Sunday, August 23, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Margate Police and Margate Fire Rescue responded to a 911 emergency call reporting that two individuals, 40-year-old Kenya Glasgow and her 2-year-old child, were reportedly struck by lightning and found lying on a sidewalk in the area of 7941 NW 1st Street in Margate.
Upon arrival, Margate Police officers and Margate Fire Rescue personnel immediately began rendering aid to the victims, including CPR.
Kenya Glasgow was transported by Margate Fire Rescue to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach; her 2-year-old child was transported by Margate Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, accompanied by a police escort.
Authorities confirmed both victims were pronounced dead after the lightning strike.
The incident remains under investigation by the Margate Police Department.
