Thru Sept. 25, senior citizens living in Broward can do just that, as the county celebrates its centennial with "Broward 100." Presented by Pompano Beach Arts at Pompano Beach Amphitheater, the "Free Flicks" series features a number of critically acclaimed films, all of which were nominated for Best Picture at the 2015 Academy Awards (The Oscars). For over a month, seniors will have the option of watching any of the following films free of charge: The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman, The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Thru Nov. 30, seniors residing in (or visiting) Key West can participate in one of the most popular activities on the island: the Key West Fishing Tournament. Because all ages are welcomed, this is not only one of the top weekend events for seniors, but also for the entire family. Admission is free and participants are classified in the following four divisions: Men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 - 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). How does it work? According to the official rules, contestants "catch a fish before a witness and release it or have it weighed at one of the official tournament weigh stations." In addition, "The heaviest of 37 species of fish will receive an award in each of the line classes listed for men, women, junior and peewee." From Oct. 10 - 18, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts presents the Broadway musical, "Once." Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, "Once" also ranks among the top activities seniors in South Florida can partake in this upcoming fall. This show features a collection of actors and musicians playing their own instruments on stage, portraying "the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs." There's great news for senior citizens living in South Florida, particularly in Miami-Dade County, as the Department of Cultural Affairs has a great program for residents 62 years of age or older. Singles and couples can obtain the The Golden Ticket Arts Guide pass, which grants them free access to a number of cultural events. However, because it is on a first-come-first-served basis, everyone is encouraged to contact the corresponding organization in order to make reservations for any particular event. On Aug. 21, the Wolfsonian-Florida International University will showcase "Ladies Leading Film Series: Norma Rae (1979)" in Miami Beach.
