MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- She's the face or should we say the lips behind a fan obsession that could become a harmful social media experiment. Teens from all over the planet, across all social media platforms are participating in the #kyliejennerchallenge.

They use shot glasses and water bottles to create a vacuum that causes a swell then post their pictures to social media.

"It's ridiculous to use suction to increase the size of something," said Dr. Leslie Bauman, a Miami based dermatologist and founder of The Baumann Cosmetic Center."If you put enough suction on the skin it actually separates the epidermis from dermis into 2 different layers. You're going to look like you have a herpes cold sore. You're going for beauty and you're going to look like you have an illness that's contractible."

Always the "momager" Kris Jenner was encouraging her daughter to post pictures of her style and even start her own hair extension line but the family insists they have not promoted anything to do with this lip challenge.

In fact, in response to the frenzy, the 17-year old teen idol posted a tweet about it Tuesday.

"I'm not here to try & encourage people/young girls to look like me -- I want young girls to be yourself and not be afraid to experiment with your look."

Some were appalled by the lip frenzy.

"That is outrageous I've never see anything look so horrible in my life " said Kate Hischen from Miami after seeing the pictures.

"I saw this. It's terrible and I hate the fact that young women think they need to do this because they see this on TV. It's really not the impression they should give young women," said
Ximena Cho from Wynwood.
