Sports Agenda For Wednesday (7/27/11)
Big Story:
First, big props to CBS4 Sports' Jason Parker for helping me out with all of the moves going down with the Dolphins and giving my CBSMiami.com sports page props on the air.
Okay, if you haven't heard the news is coming at a break-neck speed in the NFL and the Marlins won last night and for the first time in a long-time, the Marlins are now not in last place. I guess with the Marlins, that's something to celebrate.
Let's go crazier on this agenda than Republicans who have Mad Vow/Pledge Disease. (h/t Bill Maher)
Marlins: (@Washignton Nationals 7:05 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
In case you missed it, and judging by the attendance and tv ratings you haven't, the Marlins have eeked their way out of last place with last night's victory over the Nationals.
Just like everything else in Washington, the Nationals couldn't get anything going and were beaten harder than a Republican would do to the middle class.
Greg Dobbs helped spark the Marlins offensive explosion. Dobbs was a late fill-in for Gaby Sanchez who had tightness in his hamstring.
But more importantly, Emilio Bonifacio continued his torrid pace at the plate, extending his hitting streak to 24 games.
Bonifacio has been the revelation for the Fish this season and should be someone the Fish lock up on the roster.
Mike Stanton continues to lead the team in runs batted in (60), home runs (22), and nose hair. (just kidding, had to throw in a Major League reference)
Now, the Marlins can take aim at the Metropolitans as they try to claw their way out of the hole they dug in June.
Dolphins/NFL Update:
My head is spinning at the pace of these signings, deals, and everything else.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers became, I believe, the first team to sign their first-round draft pick, defensive end Adrian Clayborn out of Iowa.
Clayborn is solid, and could develop into a nice defensive end. Course the last time he was on a college football field he was completely shut down by Missouri's Elvis Fisher, but I digress.
Here's a few more deals that have been made:
Matt Hasselbeck will join the Tennessee Titans.
Donovan McNabb will likely join the Minnesota Vikings in a trade.
QB Pat Devlin was signed by the Dolphins.
Tackle Doug Free re-signed with the Cowboys.
WR Roy Williams was released by the Cowboys.
G Leonard Davis and RB Marion Barber were also released by the Cowboys.
ILB Nick Barnett was released by the Green Bay Packers (someone from the Fins call him to replace Channing Crowder)
LB Paul Posluzny was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars
WR Devin Aromashidu agreed to terms with the Vikings
CB Ike Taylor re-signed with the Steelers
QB Alex Smith re-signed with the 49ers
QB Tarvaris Jackson signed with the Seattle Seahawks (the birds are also reportedly interested in Matt Leinart *fail*)
WR Santana Moss re-signed with the Redskins
That's about all I've got right now (9:30 a.m.) on signings. The Fins have yet to announce who they've signed, but that's not surprising. If you asked Dolphins p.r. chief Harvey Greene if the earth was round, he'd have to get back to you later because the team was afraid to let any information out of the building.
