Sports Agenda For Wednesday (6/8/11)
Big Story:
I searched really hard to find something to positive to write about from the Heat's fourth quarter collapse. I really did.
Part of me said that at least they didn't give up a 33-4 run to end the game. At least LeBron wasn't missing shots. Um, We know Dwyane Wade is human.
But I really couldn't find anything after that pathetic performance. And if they're not bad enough, we can always turn to the Marlins who are doing their best Miami Dolphins impersonation.
All that and the collapse of Ohio State University football in today's agenda.
Firsties!
I've been the biggest LeBron defender, even as people were saying he wasn't clutch and wouldn't be a team player. But even I can't explain last night's performance.
Eight point, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. That's a nice stat line for Jason Kidd, but not for LeBron Freaking James, especially playing 45 minutes of the game.
Chris Bosh played well, Dwyane Wade played well, heck even Mike Miller hit some shots, but LeBron was nowhere to be found, especially in the fourth quarter.
3-11 shooting for the game?!? He had almost as many turnovers (4) as he did points (8).
Just to put it in perspective, LeBron hit three more shots than I did last night.
But, that said, we'll find out just how big of a heart he has in Game 5. If he comes out and attacks with D-Wade and take the game to the Mavericks for 48 minutes, the Mavs will lose. Book it. Done.
But, if LeBron and Wade continue to allow the Mavs to keep them 22 feet away from the basket and taking jumpshots from the outside, Miami is done, pure and simple.
Heat: (next game, Thursday, Game 5 of the NBA Finals, 9:00 p.m., ABC)
If you really want to know who the biggest winners were in the NBA Finals last night, it was ABC and the local ABC affiliate in Miami and Dallas.
They're enjoying record ratings from this series and as was pointed out by my esteemed colleague Kelly, the NBA is going to keep this cash cow going to 7 games if it possibly can.
Usually you'd expect the refs to have to help out to get the series to 7 games, but the way the Heat are playing, the refs could just stand there and watch the bricks, airballs, and turnovers stack up.
Seriously, at one point the Heat had as many turnovers as points in one stretch of the fourth quarter.
Still, they only lost the game by 3 points and one of the team's best players was nowhere to be found.
If LeBron goes for 20, the Heat are up 3-1 and scheduling the championship parade.
The defining moment of this series will be LeBron in Game 5.
He has to come out like a man possessed and attack the paint and the hoop like never before.
But, he can't play out of control. He can't force shots and D-Wade and C-Bosh can't pass up shots to try and get LeBron in the game.
It's going to be a balancing act that may be too tough for this Heat team to pull off.
This series should have been over last night, but the Heat went into their old act of hero ball twice in the series and they've lost two games because of it.
Look, Dallas has Dirk and that's it. There's no reason they should be hanging with the Heat on the court.
But until all of the Big Three decided to get the proverbial thumb out of their butts, the Heat are in trouble.
How much trouble?
The chances of the Heat winning the series dropped below 50 percent with the loss last night.
And trust me, if the Heat collapse like the Mavericks did in 2006, you will not want to listen to anything about the Heat for the next 4 months.
Plus, you really don't want to see LeBron if the Heat lose.
Hopefully though, the phrase will be turned upside down and it will become, you don't want to see LeBron angry and he's kinda ticked right now.
Marlins: (vs. Atlanta Braves, 7:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
Stop me if you heard this before, the Marlins lost last night.
Yeah, it's not a surprise, but it's disheartening to see the Fish revert back to their losing ways of last year.
Not only that, but they were blanked last night, 1-0. That's pretty brutal. But what's worse, is that it dropped the Marlins to 3rd place in the NL East, 1 game behind the Braves.
That's gonna hurt.
Tonight, the Marlins throw out Ricky Nolasco and his 4-1 record and 3.99 ERA against Derek Lowe and his 3-4 record.
Theoretically, the Marlins should be favored, but with the Fish's bats swinging and missing like Anthony Weiner on Twitter, don't expect a big victory.
College Football Quick Hit
Finally, Terrelle Pryor announced that he will be leaving Ohio State University.
Boo-hoo.
Look, the damage at Ohio State has been done. From Pryor getting paid nearly $40,000 for signed memorabilia to Jim Tressell covering it up, to the University staff all the way up to the president being at least ignorant, if not guilty of major transgressions.
Seriously, if there was ever a school that deserved the death penalty, it is Ohio State.
It was a systemic problem and the school lacked institutional control. They are essentially the SMU of this decade.
The death penalty involves shutting down a football program for a year and making it start over from scratch.
OSU won't get that, but they will get everything but that, and the program will be set back for years.
If you thought USC was hit hard, just wait until the NCAA gets done with Ohio State and the University of North Carolina. (UNC received their letter of inquiry yesterday and will get their notice of infractions soon).
