Sports Agenda For Wednesday (6/15/11)
Big Story:
There's bad, then there's Marlins bad.
The Fish stink worst than a Heat fourth quarter. They are out of contention and heading south faster than Sherman through Georgia.
Plus, there's continue hope that the NFL is thisclose to a new labor deal.
Let's hit this agenda like a Marlins fastball.
Marlins: (double-header 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. @ Philadelphia Phillies)
Watching a Marlins game right now is akin to watching the most vile horror movie you've ever seen.
In last night's game, Chris Volstad got beaten worse than the Dolphins secondary.
Volstad gave up 8 earned runs on 10 hits, including 4 home runs in a 9-1 shellacking by the Phillies.
The loss ran Volstad's record to 2-7 with a 6.07 ERA for the season. OUCH.
The Fish only have one player hitting above .300 and that's Gaby Sanchez. Logan Morrison is close with a .295 average as the number 3 in the lineup.
Let's just put it this way…the Marlins are playing so bad, they could actually be beat by many Triple-A teams.
And why was it again the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County had to give them a $600 million+ stadium again? So we're rewarding playing poorly…way to inspire the community Commissioners!
Back to the Marlins…5 homer given up in 1 game is worse than bad, it's just turrible.
The loss dropped the Marlins to 4th in the NL East and they are just 1.5 games out of last place in the division.
The Marlins have lost 14 of their last 16 games and still face a 3 more games against division leading Philadelphia.
Hanley Ramirez did come back last night, but again made no difference in the lineup.
The Marlins were built around Ramirez and Josh Johnson. Ramirez is a shell of his former self this y ear after being coddled last year and into this year.
Johnson is out and I'm beginning to believe the lack of news means he's on the shelf for the season.
In other words, great seats are available for any upcoming Marlins game.
They may end up having to pay people to come if the season continues to go this way.
1 win in the month of June…that' 1 more than you and I have right now.
The Florida Marlins motto is "catch our moves!"
I guess moving to the cellar does count in that respect.
NFL Update:
So yesterday was filled with positive reports saying the lockout is nearly over.
That's great news for me because writing about the Marlins can be quite depressing.
Here's a quick FYI on what happens with the CBA.
It will be agreed to in principle.
The agreement would be converted into a settlement agreement with the Tom Brady antitrust case.
All parties would be given notice of the settlement.
The judge in the original case, Judge Nelson, would schedule a fairness hearing when any player can object.
The union would have to be resurrected.
The union would have to approve the settlement.
We're nearing step 1, after that, things will move quickly we can hope.
College Football:
The Heisman odds are out for the upcoming season.
Andrew Luck of Stanford and Landry Jones of Oklahoma lead the pack.
Here's the fascinating part to me…only two players from the Big Three Florida schools made the list.
E.J. Manuel, Florida State Seminoles quarterback, and Florida quarterback John Brantley face 60-1 odds of winning the Heisman in 2011.
The top 5 looked like this:
Andrew Luck (9/2)
Landry Jones (13/2)
Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina RB (7/1)
Denard Robinson, Michigan QB (15/2)
LaMichael James, Oregon RB (15/2)
NHL:
Even if you don't like hockey, you should definitely check out Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight.
It's the Canucks against the Bruins for all the marbles tonight!!
I'm torn between the two teams, but will go for Boston to keep the cup in the U.S.
