Sports Agenda For Tuesday (3/29/11)
Big Story:
Well, the Heat take to the court again tonight when they travel to Cleveland to take on the truly pathetic Cavaliers. Let's face it, the reason why Cleveland and it's owner were so childish about LeBron's leaving was they knew their team would be about as bad as watching anything coming out of a place called the Newsplex.
Turns out, not only were they as bad as Channel 7, they went flying past NBCMiami lows and have essentially hit rock bottom.
For the Heat, the word yesterday was that they will not rest the big three in the last few games of the season. I find that hard to believe considering their value. I'm guessing the last 3-4 games you will see them play about a half and that's it. Gotta protect them from themselves sometimes.
The buzz going around the NFL is the Fins may be interested in a wide receiver in the draft, a draft guide let loose on Cam Newton, and the Marlins continue to look really good in Spring Training.
So if you smell what the Rock is cooking, it's the agenda!
Heat: (@ Cleveland 7:00 p.m. Sun Sports/NBATV)
It's almost a battle of the worst and first. The Cavaliers went from being a top team in the NBA's Eastern Conference to being the worst, while the Heat went from being average to closing in on the Bulls for the top playoff spot Amazing what one or two players can do isn't it.
Last time Miami traveled to Cleveland, it was really, really ugly. The crowd was out for blood from LeBron, so all LeBron did was beat his old team like a government mule.
As LeBron said about tonight's game, "it can't be any worse than before."
I don't know, the Heat were good last time, but they've been downright great as of late. The Heat finish the season with a bunch of teams that are under .500. We all know, that if the Heat want, they can blow each one of them off the court. It should start tonight in Cleveland. The Cavs would be really good, in the NBA's D-League.
Fun Fact: LeBron, Wade, and Bosh are almost averaging above 20 points a game each. LBJ and Wade are averaging more than 25 a game, while Bosh is averaging nearly 19. The next two leading scorers? Mike Bibby and Mario Chalmers.
Marlins: (vs. St. Louis [split-squad] 1:05 p.m.)
So the Marlins continued their winning ways in the second half of March yesterday with a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals. The Fish are looking like a solid team heading into the regular season and seem to be firing on all cylinders. They are led by a rapidly improving pitching staff that could be the third best in the National League behind the Phillies and Giants.
But, like my article in the Sports section said yesterday, the franchise is willing to sacrifice 2011 to put all their marbles in 2012 when they open the new Marlins stadium.
Dolphins:
For some reason, there's a bit of a buzz about the Dolphins drafting Torrey Smith of Maryland. He's a wide receiver and he's fast, but he's the last thing the Fins need. Yes, they need a receiver to stretch the field with his speed, but you don't draft that in the first round unless his name is A.J. Green. Offensively, the Fins need four things. They need a pair of guards who can consistently get to the second level. They need a running back who can hit the holes and move the pile. They need a quarterback to challenge Chad Henne.
There's only one guard worth taking in the first round, but not at 15. Mark Ingram is the only running back worth taking at 15. And at the quarterback position, you're going to be left with a choice of Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder, or possibly Jake Locker.
Locker possesses the most athletic skills, Mallet has the cannon but is flustered by pressure, and Ponder is rapidly moving up draft boards after putting together a stellar spring. He's ridiculously smart and Mike Mayock of NFL.com said he can make all the throws and is really impressed with him. That's enough for me.
But drafting a speedy receiver in the first round….paging Ted Ginn.
Cam Newton:
Much was made of him showing up for a workout with the Dolphins. Don't read anything into it. He'll be long gone by the time the Fins pick. But, if you want to read a scathing, and I mean scathing, analysis of him, check out the following from ProFootballWeekly.
They called him "very disingenuous, has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law – does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room…Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness – is not punctual, seeks shortcuts, and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable."
Ummm..yeah, how do you really feel guys?
Sounds more like a description for Vince Young and I think it may be true. But, his talent and potential are off the charts. The only thing that will determine how far he will go is how much work he puts in. Look at Michael Vick, same issues coming out of school, but last year when he finally started to play like a quarterback, he absolutely went off and had the best year of his career.
The question is, how long will it take Cam to figure it all out.
By the way, I referenced the Rock earlier because he was on WWE Raw last night. He's reportedly interested in coming back to wrestling for awhile. And after watching his last two appearances on Raw, all I can say is….PLEASE COME BACK PERMANENTLY!!!!!
