TALLAHASSSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) -- A Central Florida senator filed a bill Wednesday that would require a statewide minimum salary of $50,000 for teachers.

The bill (SB 296), filed by Sen. Darren Soto, D-Orlando, would take effect with the 2016-17 school year and also would require future increases based on inflation.

Dubbed the "Florida Teacher Fair Pay Act," the bill would require lawmakers to set aside enough money in the state's main education-funding formula to pay for the salaries and other education needs.

The bill will be considered during the 2016 legislative session, which starts in January.
