Security Guard Charged In Shooting Death Of Woman In SW Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A 54-year-old security guard has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a woman shot and killed accidentally at a small SW Miami-Dade casino last Friday.

Alejandro Cabrera-Cruz faced a judge Tuesday and was given a $25,000 bond and house arrest.

The family of the victim, Arnitryce Crawford is devastated and preparing for her funeral.

"It's senseless. She was just 62. She just received her first social security check on October 23rd and never had a chance to enjoy it," said her sister
Sondra Ragin.

Crawford known as 'Neet" to her family had just retired after 33 years with the U.S. postal service.

"My sister was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Ragin.

On Friday, Crawford was in an unmarked corner casino playing a slot machine when police say Cabrera-Cruz accidentally fatally shot her in the back.

At his bond hearing Cabrera-Cruz told the judge he's been in South Florida for three to four years.

According to his arrest report, Cabrera-Cruz had been issued the firearm Friday morning but he didn't have a holster.

He was 'familiarizing himself' with the weapon, police say, when Crawford was shot.

Cabrera-Cruz was 'negligent' police determined, because he did 'not' unload the firearm properly.

During questioning police say Cabrera-Cruz was 'emotional, apologetic and remorseful' for the horrible accident.

"I'm not bitter but it's the carelessness," said Ragin.

Crawford leaves behind a son, two grandkids, her mother and a brother and sister.

Her family says services will be held November 16th at 1 p.m. at Sunset House Mission Baptist Church in Miami.
