Second Suspect In Lauderdale Lakes Rape/Robbery Arrested
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A second man accused of taking part in a violent rape and robbery in Lauderdale Lakes is now in custody.
Jonathan Carter, 21, Carter turned himself in to detectives with the Broward Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit. His alleged accomplice, 24-year old Christopher Baker, was arrested on Feb. 24th.
The sheriff's office said after reports of the attack aired on television they received numerous calls identifying the men involved. One of those callers was a family member of Carter who identified him as a friend of Baker. Both men have reportedly admitted their involvement in the crime.
Detectives say the incident happened in darkness at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 9th. The victim told detectives she was walking northbound on State Road 7 to meet a co-worker who normally gives her a ride to work.
Suddenly, she said, in the 2400 block of State Road 7 when she stopped at their meeting place at One United Bank, two men approached her. One was on a bicycle; the other was on foot.
According to a BSO incident report, one of the men pulled a grey handgun and forced her to the drive thru teller area on the northeast side of the bank where there are numerous trees and bushes.
The second suspect choked her, struck her, forced her to the ground and sexually battered her.
After the rape, BSO said the men fled with the woman's cell phone and purse.
Both Baker and Carter face charges of sexual battery and robbery for this crime and have lengthy criminal histories. Carter has been previously arrested on charges that include burglary, robbery, and theft and is currently on probation for burglary. Baker's priors include loitering, robbery, theft, burglary and aggravated assault.
