MIAMI (CBSMiami) – With cameras flashing and crowds cramming to get a better look, international superstar Ricky Martin is using his star power to help people in his native island of Puerto Rico.

Martin is on the cover of this month's men's issue of Ocean Drive Magazine. The cover party was held Tuesday night at Wall in South Beach.

"It's so cool to be on the cover of Ocean Drive Magazine. I've been been in Miami for so long, but it's even more important because they are on board with me to help Puerto Rico," he said.

It's all about The Ricky Martin Foundation helping those who are recovering from Hurricane Maria.

"It's extremely painful when you visit. I just visited a region where at least a 1000 families lost everything they had. Absolutely everything. That's why we're in crisis mode to gather and bring the basic necessities as fast we can," he said

Dignitaries and party guests paid a $40 cover charge for a chance to get close to the star, who has raised over #3 million dollars so far – very close to his $3.5 million goal.

"In the long term we are trying to build homes. I had the opportunity to build a relationship with Habitat For Humanity," Martin explained.

In the magazine, Martin talks about his new role in the upcoming TV series titled "Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" where he plays the role of Versace's boyfriend.

"It's been a dream to work with Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez and the others. We're talking about great actors and to be able to work with them, it's like 'yes of course, I will definitely celebrate this!'" he said.

The men's issue of Ocean Drive Magazine with Martin on the cover is out now. He is hoping it's events like these that will help raise even more money for those who are near and dear to his heart.
