MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Tis the end of hurricane season! November 30th marks the official end of the Atlantic basin hurricane season.
Here's a rundown the 2014 Atlantic tropical season.
There were eight named storms, six of which were hurricanes and two of those were major hurricanes. With several factors taken into consideration, including wind speed, a tropical system gets named. Winds of 39mph to 73mph are Tropical Storms and become named.
Tropical systems with winds of 74mph or higher are classified as Hurricanes, and are assigned names.
Once a system meets all conditions required to be classified as a hurricane, they are rated, according to intensity which is based on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
This scale uses 1 through 5 as a "rating".
Category 1:
Sustained Winds 74-95mph
Category 2:
Sustained Winds 96-110 mph
When a storm reaches 111mph sustained winds, or greater, it is then classified as a category 3 or higher and also considered a major hurricane.
Category 3:
Sustained Winds 111-129 mph
Category 4:
Sustained Winds 130-156 mph
Category 5:
157 mph or higher
