Possible Furlough Day For Palm Beach Teachers To Help Budget
WEST PALM BEACH (CBS4)- Most of the 21,000 employees at the Palm Beach County School District could be asked to take a one-day furlough to help fill a $35 million budget deficit.
The proposal would save $5 million and allow the district to restore some previously proposed cuts such as police officer and psychologist positions, according to the Sun Sentinel.
The proposal was approved Friday by the district's Budget Advisory Committee. It would have to be bargained with the district's largest employee union.
A leader with the Classroom Teachers Association said teachers are already facing health insurance cost increases and a new 3 percent pension contribution. Others say teachers would favor taking a furlough day if it means saving jobs.
