TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) — More than 19,000 comments and suggestions have been submitted to the Florida Department of Education during the month-long review of the Common Core Standards for schools.
The deadline to submit a comment was midnight Thursday.
The Common Core Standards have been developed by a consortium of states, but conservative commentators have tried to argue the standards are a way for the federal government to take over schools.
However, the power over the schools in Common Core would be the same as it is today.
The question now is whether or not state officials will alter the standards based on the comments. The state also held three public hearings on the standards.
Gov. Rick Scott asked for the hearings and the review amid a backlash against the standards.
A spokesman for the department said Friday that the comments will be analyzed and summaries will be provided to members of the State Board of Education.
The state board is scheduled to review the comments at a Nov. 19 meeting.
