Father of teen victim in Opa-locka shooting says son was "ambushed"
A father is speaking out to CBS News Miami after he said his 14-year-old son and another teenager were ambushed early Tuesday morning at an Opa-Locka apartment complex.
"I heard they were ambushed. Somebody broke in to their crib and shot up my son and his friends," Eddie Mills said while sharing a photo of his son Robert with CBS News Miami. "They banged on the door and someone opened the door and snatched them out of the house and shot them right there."
Mills said his son was constantly talking about his love for music.
"I am feeling outraged and upset," Mills said. "He was shot in the face and he was shot twice in his leg and twice in his thigh. I don't know why this happened. I want to say maybe this was a robbery gone bad. They just tried to break in to the house like they had some beef whatever."
He said he didnt know how the suspects got into the area because it was in a gated community.
"He was staying at his mom's apartment and another boy who was 13 was also wounded," Mills said. "I want to say to the public if you see something, say something. Put the guns down because people can really get hurt from all these senseless shootings."
Ops-Locka Police said it happened early Tuesday morning at the Sailboat Cove apartment complex at Northwest 17th Avenue and 143rd Street.
A police radio transmission said "Trauma alert. One shot in the leg. The other shot in the buttocks and the face."
Police said the two teenagers were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
They said they detained several people who tried to flee, and recovered multiple weapons from a car that may be connected to the incident.
A grey Chevrolet was removed from the complex and a third person was treated for injuries at the scene.
Police have not released a description of any shooter and have not said why this incident happened.
Anyone with information that can help police should call them or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
