One M-D Commission Seat Decided, One Up In Air
MIAMI (CBS4) - Miami-Dade County's Districts 2 and 8 have two new commissioners. District 2's race pitted a former North Miami Vice-Mayor, Jean Monestime, versus the incumbent county commissioner Dorrin Rolle.
Monestime was victorious in Tuesday's election, with 53% of the vote.
"The response is very positive," Monestime told CBS4 last month, "and voters want change."
Monestime is a real estate broker by trade, but was also a former commissioner and vice-mayor in North Miami. He's possibly the most serious challenger an incumbent county commissioner has faced in more than a decade.
"We understand it's an uphill battle, but we don't believe it's impossible," Monestime said.
Dorrin Rolle, had a strong and a loyal base of supporters. In a six-man race during the primary, he picked up 40 percent of the vote and he's confident of a win.
While he faced no charges for anything he's done as a commissioner, Rolle still has faced numerous questions about his conduct as a commissioner.
Rolle stood by his record as a commissioner for District 2 and touts millions spent to improve housing and billions spent on infrastructure in the district.
The district has a little more than a hundred thousand citizens with a mix of poor and affluent communities.
In District 8, Lynda Bell and Eugene Flinn were locked in a tight battle. With 100 percent of the ballots in, the two were statistically tied, with Bell leading the race by fewer than 400 votes.
Both were trying to take over the seat of outgoing Commissioner Katy Sorenson who is retiring after 16 years in office.
Both candidates had mayoral experience. Lynda Bell is the former mayor of Homestead. She was not re-elected last year. Eugene Flinn is the first Mayor of Palmetto Bay.
