North Gardens High School Student Shot By What Witness Says 'Sounded Like A Machine Gun'

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A North Gardens High School student had to be transported via rescue chopper to a local hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was shot in the leg.

Preliminary reports indicate an 18-year-old student was impacted by a bullet while he was in class.

It happened at around 2 p.m. at the Miami Gardens charter school located in the 4600 block of NW 183rd St.

"It sounded like a machine gun," said one student.

Witnesses said they saw bullets flying inside the classroom.

CBS News Miami has learned the wounded student will be OK.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said another person was also transported to a hospital following the shooting. No word on that person's condition.

South Florida Police Benevolent Association President Steadman Stahl calls what happened alarming.

"It's outrageous a shooting like that even happens in front of a high school," says Stahl.

After the shooting, a Miami Gardens Police officer requested back up trying to stop a suspicious vehicle, which sped off.

That's when Stahl says the gunfire continued.

"Bad guys are hanging out the back of the car shooting at the officer as he's giving chase, they got stuck in traffic at some point and one of them got out with an assault rifle," says Stahl.

A bailout followed in the area of NW 173rd Street and NW 7th Avenue.

Authorities said multiple subjects were apprehended. Reports from the scene indicated at least two suspects had been taken into custody.

Police did not say what may have led to the shooting.
