MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Two children arrested for allegedly attacking and trying to steal a 10-year old's bike in Hallandale Beach will not face formal charges.

An assistant public defender said the 7-year-old and 8-year-old children who were arrested will instead enter a court-ordered diversion program and will receive counseling.

The victim whose first name is Joshua said he was followed by the youngsters when he left BF James Park at 777 N.W. 1st Avenue near his home.

Authorities said he was punched in the face and the back of the head by the 2nd graders who demanded his bicycle.

He was not seriously hurt in the incident.

The police chief of Hallandale Beach said while his officer had cause to make the arrests, he said she could have been more lenient.
