NORTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The 70-unit apartment building deemed unsafe the day after Christmas remains uninhabitable, according to officials.
Gold King Apartments, at 13285 NE 6 Avenue in North Miami, suffered a partial roof collapse on December 26 after heavy rain seeped all the way down to the first floor. The building was having work done to the roof.
According to North Miami's building official, the multi-family apartment building still has certain life and safety issues that must be satisfied before the residents are allowed to return.
Twelve units suffered significant damage that will take even more time to repair. Residents of the remaining units will be able to return when each unit meets the minimum housing standard—which requires working air and electrical work to meet code.
Friday's inspection revealed that the building still has electrical work that needs to be completed.
The property owner is responsible for making the repairs necessary for the building to successfully pass inspection.
Nine days later, residents of the building remain displaced. Only North Miami's building officials can authorize residents to return to their home.
