New Parasailing Safety Regulations Take Effect

MIAMI (CBSMiami/NSF) -- New regulations meant to create safety in the parasailing industry took effect on Wednesday.

The law was passed after some high-profile parasailing accidents, including a videotaped incident last year in which two Indiana teens were seriously injured while parasailing at Panama City Beach.

The new law, in part, will forbid parasailing during severe weather conditions and require operators to carry minimum insurance coverage.

"The safety of Floridians and the many tourists who visit our state is paramount, and this law will hopefully prevent parasailing tragedies such as we've seen," Senate sponsor Maria Sachs said in a statement released Tuesday by her office. "I believe this (is) a new day for the industry and I'm excited to help promote the significant strides we've made."
