Migration & Fraud An Issue For US, Cuban Officials

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- U.S. and Cuban officials met this week to talk about how to prevent human smuggling and fraud.
Representatives with both countries met in Miami from February 1st through the 4th.
State Department officials say they spoke about combating human smuggling and travel document fraud.
Officials said the talks are important to "advancing both countries' commitment to ensuring safe, legal, and orderly migration."
The department says the U.S. is concerned for the safety of all migrants throughout the region who try to enter countries without a visa.

The meeting comes as the number of Cubans migrating to the U.S. has gone up significantly by sea and by land.
Coast Guard officials said the amount of Cubans making their way to the U.S by sea is up by 350 percent. In Central America, thousands of Cubans were stranded while trying to reach the U.S. border by land. Dozens arrived in South Florida last month.
