Miami-Dade Shelter Hosts Distemper Prevention Event Sunday

MIAMI (CBS4)- Just weeks after a distemper outbreak halted normal operations at Miami-Dade County's animal shelter, the Animal Services Department will hold a Distemper Prevention event Sunday.

At the event, Veterinarians will vaccinate dogs older than 8 weeks for $2 from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. Sunday at the shelter located at 7401 NW 74th St., Medley.

The airborne distemper virus is especially deadly to puppies and unvaccinated dogs. During the late March outbreak, rescue groups and adopters took 500 dogs and puppies, many exposed to the virus. Parts of the shelter then closed for cleaning and renovation.

"Too few dogs and puppies are vaccinated against distemper and parvo in our community," said Dr. Sara Pizano, director of Animal Services. "Infectious diseases are a serious problem in our county and not just a shelter problem.. We encourage pet owners to see their veterinarians for regular vaccinations and preventive care."
