Confrontation after Miami-Dade e-scooter crash leads to fatal shooting, deputies say

The search for a shooter continues after Miami-Dade deputies say that a confrontation following a crash involving e-scooters in Gladeview over the weekend led to gunfire and left one man dead.

According to information provided by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Northwest 57th Street and Northwest 22nd Court just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

When deputies arrived, they said they found an adult man, who was later identified as 24-year-old Darryl Johnson, suffering from gunshot wounds. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

While the incident was being investigated, deputies said that it was learned the victim and shooter were traveling on electric scooters and crashed at the intersection.

That then led to a dispute, and deputies said the subject pulled out a gun and shot Johnson.

Deputies said the shooter, who was with a child, got back onto his scooter and fled the scene. There is now a search underway for the person involved.

Victim's mother describes him as "incredible, loving"

Darryl Johnson's mother, Stacy Bernard, showed up to the scene where her son was shot Monday morning, hoping to find clues about her son's murder.

"He's my firstborn, and he was an amazing son; everyone loved him. Everyone is in shock; they can't believe it, because Darryl is a good kid," said Bernard.

Sunday night, investigators surrounded a black e-scooter, searching for clues, after 24-year-old Johnson, known by loved ones as DJ, was shot and killed.

"He wasn't on the street selling drugs; he was on his way to work, to make his honest bread," said Bernard, who says her son was on his way to his job at WingStop on 79th Street Sunday night when he was killed.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, Johnson was riding his e-scooter near NW 75th Street and NW 22nd Court when he crashed into another man, who was also riding an E-scooter.

Detectives say the suspect had a child with him on his scooter when he got into an argument with Johnson over the crash.

Investigators say the suspect shot Johnson and fled with the child he was with on the scooter.

"You have taken away our angel, and I pray that you ask God for forgiveness," said Bernard.

A house nearby was struck by several bullets, but no one inside was hurt.

Deputies are asking anyone who may have surveillance video or any details about the shooting to come forward.
