Marlins Sign Journeyman Third Baseman Casey McGehee
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins continued their annual roster overhaul Wednesday when the team agreed to terms with 31-year-old third baseman Casey McGehee.
The former Milwaukee Brewers player will be the sixth player the Marlins will put at third base since the team traded two-time MLB MVP Miguel Cabrera in 2007. By the way, none of the players the Marlins acquired for Cabrera are with the team and a few are completely out of baseball.
McGehee spent last year in Japan and his new contract with the Marlins will be for around $1.1 million with incentives, according to the Miami Herald.
McGehee's best season came in 2010 when he hit .285 with 23 home runs and 104 RBI's. For his career, McGehee is a .257 hitter with 61 home runs and 283 RBI's over five seasons.
The Marlins are using McGehee as a stopgap solution while the team awaits the eventual call-up of Colin Moran. The first-round pick tore through the low-level minors last year and could be ready for the majors by the end of this season or 2015.
