Manhunt Continues For 'Extremely Dangerous' Sibling Fugitives
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (CBS4)- Authorities released a dash-cam video from the high-speed chase of three fugitive Florida siblings.
Investigators said a police officer dodged as many as 20 rounds while chasing 21-year-old Ryan Dougherty, his 26-year-old brother Dylan and their sister Lee Grace, 29, in central Florida. CBS News Correspondent Elaine Quijano reported investigators said the Doughertys opened fire on a residential street, and then, in a drugstore parking lot.
The trio got away when a bullet blew out a tire on the police cruiser.
Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said he hopes the siblings will make a mistake as they continue to elude authorities after allegedly shooting at a the officr and robbing a bank in Georgia.
Appearing on CBS's "The Early Show" Tuesday, Nocco called the Zephyrhills siblings "extremely dangerous." He said they wouldn't be afraid to "get into a battle with law enforcement."
The nationwide manhunt began Aug. 2 when the trio took off after firing shots at the Zephyrhills police officer who tried to pull them over for speeding. Hours later, three people wearing masks robbed the Certus Bank in Valdosta, Ga., about 210 miles north.
Their mother, Barbara Bell, of East Palatka, Fla., told police she received a text message from Ryan Dougherty on the day of the robbery saying, "At some point, we all have to die." Later, she made a public appeal for her children to surrender, saying, "Please prove me right and everybody wrong by doing the right thing now, and turning yourselves in."
A search of the home where the suspects reportedly lived revealed a sophisticated underground bunker system, authorities say.
Authorities said a white sedan similar to the one involved in the Florida shooting has been spotted in Georgia and Chattanooga, Tenn.
Nocco shared a wanted poster on "The Early Show." It said, "Armed and Dangerous. Suspects driving a white Subaru Impreza, New York tag, #FBE5900. If seen, do not approach, call 911."
