Judge Sets, Revokes Bond In DUI Case Which Created A Sinkhole
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A woman who reportedly created a sinkhole after hitting a fire hydrant while fleeing the scene of an accident will remain in jail.
Tuesday morning, 50-year old Ivanka Cancic, whose charges include DUI, DUI with property damage, DUI with injuries and driving with a suspended license, appeared in bond court.
After reviewing her history of drug and driving violations, Judge John "Jay" Hurley set bond at $170,000 for her 10 criminal charges and then revoked it on an earlier charge to make sure she wouldn't be back on the streets and behind the wheel.
The chain of events began around 6 a.m. Monday when Cancic reportedly struck 68-year old Betty Greene who was out for a walk with her church group in the 4700 block of NW 24th Court in Lauderdale Lakes. Greene was taken to the hospital where she was listed as stable.
Broward sheriff's investigators said after striking Greene, Cancic took off and then slammed into a fire hydrant a few blocks away in the 4800 block of NW 22nd Court.
Thousands of gallons of water spewed from the hydrant which created a sinkhole like ground collapse which partially swallowed a car owned by Diane Duchesne who was grateful she wasn't in the car when the ground gave way beneath it.
