MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hurricane Irma's rapid intensification has ended for now.

At 10:40 p.m., the center of the storm was about 775 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Irma, a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph. A turn toward the west is expected on Friday, followed by a turn toward the west-southwest on Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.

Fluctuations in strength, up or down, are possible during the next several days, but Irma is expected to remain a powerful hurricane through the weekend.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
