Injuries Mar Final Day Of Key West Powerboat Races
KEY WEST(CBS4/AP)- Two powerboat racers were injured on the final day of the Key West World Championship on Sunday.
These injuries came on top of the deaths of three racers earlier in the week.
Super Boat International officials said two New Jersey men were injured on Sunday when their 38-foot Warpaint slammed into a wave.
One of the men was airlifted to a Miami hospital as a precaution, said Super Boat International spokesman Rodrick Cox. The other man was expected late in the day from a Florida Keys hospital.
Joey Gratton, from Sarasota, died Saturday morning at the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami from injuries sustained Friday when the 38-foot catamaran with twin 850 horsepower engines rolled in a final lap on Friday. Gratton's racing partner Stephen Page, of Fort Myers, was released from the hospital Saturday.
On Wednesday, powerboat racers Robert M. Morgan, of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Jeffrey Tillman, of Kaiser, Mo., died when their 46-foot catamaran Big Thunder Marine went airborne and then crashed during a race inside Key West Harbor.
