MIAMI (CBSMiami) – It's International Day of Yoga at Green Monkey in Miami Beach.

They are preparing for more than 500 people at a community yoga event at Soundscape Park.

"Everyone is bringing friends and family," said Gurby Marks, a yoga enthusiast. "I'm bringing my little one-year-old niece to the event tonight."

The theme for Tuesday's event is 'Come Together'.

"We wanted to tie in the music aspect from the Beatles 'Come Together,'" said Paula Walker with Green Monkey Yoga.  "When we do these big off site events it's about uniting the community."

The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st International Day of Yoga in 2014, an annual event observed by thousands around the world.

Event goers can mark the day by taking a selfie because Tuesday happens to also be National Selfie Day.

This month we also celebrate National Rocky Road Day, National Kissing Day, National Pink Day and National Hollerin' Contest Day.

But how do these national days come about? As it turns out it's not easy.

The national days require a petition, collection of signatures and a presidential declaration.

At last count there are 1200 national days in a year.

For Gurby Marks, this day is a significant one.

After years of struggling with health issues she says yoga has changed her life.

"I have an important intelligence exam and I came here before this important test to clear my head and clear my mind believe in my heart and intuition," said Marks.

Taking a selfie may not transform your life but one woman says that yoga just might.

"Even practicing breath work or whatever it is, it can change your life," said Marggie King, a local yoga teacher. "It can make you feel better, it can cleanse, it can detox.  It can help you in so many different ways."

"If you feel good about yourself you make other people feel good," added King. "So if we all just did a little bit the world will be a better place."
