Gov. Scott To Address Hurricane Conference Wednesday

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) – With the start of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season less than a month away, state and federal officials are urging Florida residents to get ready now.

The heads of the National Hurricane Center and the Federal Emergency Management Agency will bring their preparedness message Wednesday to the annual Governor's Hurricane Conference in Fort Lauderdale.

Gov. Rick Scott and the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management also will address the conference Wednesday. So will Lt. Col. Jerome Hatfield of the New Jersey State Police.

Emergency management officials are meeting in Fort Lauderdale this week to prepare for the upcoming storm season and to discuss the lessons learned last year from Superstorm Sandy.

The six-month Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1.
