Gov. Scott May Veto Tuition Increase
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) -- Gov. Rick Scott hinted Friday that he is considering vetoing a 3 percent tuition increase as he considers the budget lawmakers sent him this week.
"Tuition in our state has gone up close to 70 percent over the last five years," Scott said in a Friday morning interview on WFLA radio in Tampa. "I'm very concerned about tuition increases."
University officials have said they expect a veto.
Former Gov. Charlie Crist used the line item veto to reject a tuition increase in 2007 and there were questions then about whether it was legal.
Scott administration officials have said the Crist veto sets precedent to allow a governor to veto a tuition hike.
