Video shows second crane collapsing onto roof of Fort Lauderdale home; no injuries reported

An investigation is underway in Fort Lauderdale after two cranes collapsed onto a home on Thursday morning, and the incident was caught on video.

Fire rescue officials received a 911 call at 9:15 a.m. reporting that a crane had collapsed and a truck had overturned in the 700 block of Southeast 8th Street.

Video provided by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue showed a truck that the crane was on top of tipped over, and that sent the crane toppling onto the roof of the home.

"Luckily, no one was home, and no workers suffered injuries," Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman said. "We called an inspector, and they say it's an unsafe structure".

The family was in the process of having their house tented for termites when the initial accident occurred. The stabilizing footers of the first crane were yanked from the ground, causing the truck to overturn and the boom to fall onto the roof.

A second crane brought in to remove the first piece of equipment was apparently too heavy and also collapsed onto the roof.

The owner of the crane company was on scene but declined to comment.

Neighbor Michael Fine said the family had been working on renovating the home for more than a year.

"My heart goes out to the family," Fine said. "They were so excited to move into this house now they have to deal with this tragedy".

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors were on scene Thursday afternoon speaking with workers.

It remains unclear when the two cranes will be removed.
