Florida Landscaping Company Fined After Worker Dies From Extreme Heat

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined a Florida landscaping company $16,000 after a worker died in 100-degree temperatures.
Workers from Olin Landscaping were tending to a house in Venice, on August 25th when the heat index reached as high as 103 degrees.
In a report, OSHA said the worker became lightheaded after using a lawn edger for about six hours. He was placed in the shade and given drinks. He went home, passed out and became unresponsive.
The company can pay the fine, request an informal conference with OSHA or challenge the citation.
OSHA's Tampa director Les Grove says it underscores that workers need water, shade and rest while working in the heat.
