Early Voting Turnout Improves For General Election
MIAMI (CBS4) - South Florida voters are turning out in greater numbers for early voting in the general election than they did in the August primary election, but as in the primary election the number of voters choosing to use a mail-in absentee ballot far outstrips the number using early voting.
In the first 6 days of Miami-Dade early voting, a total of 31 thousand voters came to the polls, but in 7 of the county's 20 early voting locations fewer than a thousand people voted. At the Lemon City Library, just over 100 people a day voted, on the average.
Contrast that with the results for absentee balloting. To date, 72 thousand ballots have been returned in Miami-Dade. As CBS4.com reported during the Primary election, it costs the county far less to have a voter cast his or her ballot absentee, from home, than it does to invite that voter to an early voting polling place.
In Broward county, the early voting turnout is slightly less than in Miami-Dade county, but the totals per polling place are greater on the average. The county added 2 more polling places for the General Election, and has been averaging about 5 thousand voters a day.
As of Saturday, just under 30 thousand people in Broward have used early voting. Broward's absentee ballot information was not available Sunday. Monroe county does not make these statistics available online.
Voters will be able to add to those totals Sunday, but only in Miami-Dade county. Both Broward and Monroe counties do not allow early voting Sunday.
Already in Miami-Dade alone, upwards of two hundred thousand voters have requested absentee ballots, a brisk pace leading up to November 2nd.
You can request an absentee ballot through October 27th.
If you're going to vote in person, you've got 7-days including weekends to do so. Hours are flexible too, with sites opening as early as 7 a.m. and closing as late as 7 p.m.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
Miami-Dade voters were sent sample ballots to ensure that everyone has the chance to review ballot items before going to the polls, and those should have been in voters homes by this weekend. It is also available on the CBS4 Campaign2010 page under "Sample Ballots" or by calling 3-1-1. It is printed in English, Spanish and Creole and prepares voters for what to expect on the ballot including candidate races and issues, how to properly vote, the Early Voting schedule and absentee ballot information.

BROWARD COUNTY
Broward County voters can also vote early starting October 18th, but unlike past years, voters will not be able to cast ballots on Sundays. Sunday voting was eliminated by Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes after budget cuts left her without the resources her office had in past elections. In addition, Broward County eliminated a number of early voting polling locations, again, in a cost cutting move.
Broward County added 2 additional sites after the August Primary, but it also changed the hours for all sites
Broward sites will be open 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day except Sunday, when Broward has elected not to hold early voting. The last day to vote early in Broward is Saturday, October 30th

Monroe County voters can vote early starting October 18th, excluding Sundays. 5 sites will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with locations in Key West, Big Pine Key, Marathon, Islamorada, and Key Largo. Monroe County will offer no after-work early voting, just 2 Saturdays for those who must work. The last day to vote early in Monroe is Saturday, October 30th.
