Downtown Breaks Ground For Miami World Center

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Officials have broken ground for one of the largest development projects in South Florida history.
Project leaders put on their hard hats and grabbed their shovels for the ceremony Thursday morning at the construction site.
Developers are hoping the $1.7 billion Miami World Center will reinvent and rejuvenate the downtown area with an ambitious vision of style and luxury to support the community and attract travelers. Boasting 1.7 million square feet of space, the project will take up six city blocks.

When completed, it'll be the second largest urban development project in the country and will offer thousands of jobs to South Floridians.
"We have 600 construction jobs just created for our tower. And the Miami World Center, as a whole, is gonna have somewhere in the thousands of construction jobs," said Dan Kodsi of Paramount Ventures.
The mega project features a 60-story, 700-foot skyscraper with more than 500 units, including a promenade that will be home to dozens of retailers and dining establishments.
The Miami World Center is expected to be completed by 2018.
