Don Francisco Says Adios To 'Sabado Gigante' After 53 Years

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – He is the king of Spanish language television and is the most recognizable face in Latin America Don Francisco.

For 53 years Mario Kreutzberger, better known as Don Francisco, has brought 'Sabado Gigante' to life. But on Saturday the longest running variety show in television history is saying 'adios.'

"It's different. I had three years to prepare myself and when you reach the moment it's sad on one side but very proud on the other," said Don Francisco to CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez.

Rodriguez who began her television career as a spokes model on 'Sabado Gigante' had the opportunity to sit down with the man who gave her, her big break as he prepares to say good bye to his millions of viewers.

"I'm trying to think what I am going to say when I walk away the last two minutes. I really don't know.  But I feel a tremendous gratitude to the audience," said Don Francisco.

As they sat in the Univision studio under the bright lights, Rodriguez asked him if he was aware of the impact he has had on so many and all of his accomplishments. Don Francisco replied not really, "I feel like a regular guy."

Kreutzberger is a modest man who has accomplished what many of dream of.

He has made in into the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the longest running variety show in television history, he has united thousands of families, launched hundreds of careers, has a star in Hollywood, he has interviewed countless celebrities, presidents and dignitaries. But as Don Francisco closes this chapter of his life shares the one interview he only dreams of.

"I am a big admirer, the pope the actual Pope Francisco and maybe I can do it that is my big dream," he said.

Don Francisco says he is not done yet, but for now he is concentrating on getting through his last show which will air live Saturday September 19th on Univision.
