Call About Dead Body Ends In Police Involved Shooting In Hallandale Beach
HALLANDALE BEACH (CBSMiami) – A call about a body led to a police-involved shooting in Hallandale Beach Monday morning.
Police say around 7 a.m. they received an anonymous call about a dead body in front of a home at NE 10th Street and NE 12th Avenue. The caller abruptly hung up.
Officers were sent to the area to check it out. When they arrived, there was no dead body. However, there was a man slouched over a city trash bin. When the officers approached him to see if he needed help, he drew a gun.
"Officers responded to the area and encountered a male. This male did have a weapon. The officer was forced to fire. The male was transported to a local hospital," said police Captain Ra Shanna Dabney-Donovan.
Police have not said how many shots were fired.
"The officer was in fear for his life and his safety. We are still investigating the reasons behind it," said Dabney-Donovan.
There are reports that the man was injured before the officers arrived, but that information is still under investigation. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting in the investigation.
Just behind the scene, a family visiting from Montreal got the scare of a lifetime when a bullet flew through their bedroom window.
"We heard like a lot of noise behind in the street behind and then we heard a much bigger noise then a bullet hit the wall behind me while I was standing making breakfast," said Laurie who did not want to give her last name.
In the apartment, there is a bullet hole in the window pane and in the wall.
Laurie said she feels fortunate that no one was in the bedroom at the time. Their one-year old daughter just happened to wake up early and was in the kitchen.
"If she would have woken up at 7 o'clock when the gunfire happened, I probably would have been there changing her diaper, being hit by the bullet," she said.
Hallandale Beach police have not released the name of the officer or the man who was shot.
