Coronavirus Update: Miami-Dade First Responders Get 10,000 Donated KN95 Protective Masks

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - South Florida law enforcement agencies received free government-approved protective masks on Monday, to help them while they are working through the coronavirus crisis.

Ten thousand masks were distributed at several locations in Miami-Dade.

An anonymous donor provided the masks and the Hispanic Police Officers Association helped with distribution.

"Maybe with 10,000 masks, we prevent an infection or someone dying," said organizer Maria Elvira Salazar.

"Our officers are on the front lines. These are the guys and gals protecting our public," said Captain Alberto Maza with the FWC who was among the first to get a box of free masks.

Florida International University officers are getting masks too, even though the campus is closed.

"We are in contact with students who were not able to fly out. So even though we are closed, we are actively involved in the FIU community," said FIU police captain Alberto Alberto.

With this lifeline for law enforcement, there was a plea to everyone in the community to do their part.

"We are asking the public to stay home, but if you need us, we will be there," said Steadman Stahl, president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association.
