MIAMI (CBSMiami) - One of the owners of a family owned food mart in a southwest Miami-Dade strip mall was airlifted to a hospital after an early morning shooting.
Sikeer Aktaruzzaman, 69, was on the job around 6:30 a.m. at the Shapon Food Mart, at 29601 SW 162nd Avenue, when he was shot multiple times.
Aktaruzzaman was airlifted to Kendall Regional Trauma Hospital where he was rushed into surgery. He's listed in critical condition.
Aktaruzzaman's son Mohammad Shafir told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that his father was shot in the stomach and leg. Aktaruzzaman's family has owned the store for the past 13 ten years. Shafir said he doesn't understand why anyone would want to hurt his father.
"He's a good person," said Shafir who added that his father works in the store alone in the mornings.
Aktaruzzaman's brother-in-law Mohammad Hossain took D'Oench inside the store and showed him the blood-stained carpet where Aktaruzzaman collapsed after being shot.
Hossain said, "The criminal needed the money and he shot him because he would not give up the money. That was the reason. He loved the money that he earned in his store. I feel bad about what happened. This is a bad thing. And this was a bad guy who did this."
Shafir said nothing like this has ever happened at the store before.
"He's a really nice, he's worked a long time here. Every morning at six o'clock he opens the store," said Sikeer Aktaruzzaman's friend Mohammad Huda. "It's really unfortunate."
Police are working to determine what led to the shooting. At this time they have not released a description of the gunman.
Shafir said he was showing Miami-Dade Police the surveillance tape from inside the store. It's not clear if any useful images were captured.
Anyone with information that can help should call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
