BSO Follow Trail Of Evidence To School Burglary Suspects
POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – Like Hansel and Gretel's bread crumb trail, Broward Sheriff's deputies followed a trail of stolen property which led them to a pair of suspected school burglars.
Monday night, around 11:30 p.m., a silent alarm was tripped at Cypress Elementary School on SW 3rd Avenue in Pompano Beach. Arriving deputies found one of the school's windows had been broken in with a hammer. After looking around they were able to determine that a 46 inch television, computer monitor with keyboard and a DVD player had been stolen from room 513.
As deputies more arrived, a perimeter was set up in the surrounding neighborhood. The sheriff's office also sent a helicopter and K-9 units to assist in the search for those responsible for the break in.
A police dog tracked the suspects to the southeast side of the school. The track led deputies to the Lyons Park neighborhood next to the school. Along the track, deputies found some of the stolen property that led them to a nearby residence.
The suspects, 18-year old Anthony Peck and 20-year old Demetrius Gibson, were found hiding in some bushes in the fenced-in backyard of a home in the 900 block of Southwest 3 Avenue.
Peck and Gibson were taken into custody and arrested on burglary and grand theft charges. The total value of the stolen items is $2,000.
