Aaron Cohen Bill Sent To Gov. Scott For Signature
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - The Legislature has sent four bills to Gov Rick Scott, including a measure that would toughen penalties for drivers who leave the scenes of serious traffic accidents.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, is named after Aaron Cohen, a 36-year-old bicyclist who was killed in a 2012 hit-and-run accident on the Rickenbacker Causeway.
In part, it would create a four-year minimum mandatory sentence for drivers who leave the scenes of accidents involving deaths.
The other bills sent to Scott were a measure (SB 230) that would create the Central Florida Expressway Authority, a measure (HB 41) that would establish the Florida Law Enforcement Officers' Hall of Fame and a measure (SB 132) dealing with specialty license plates. Scott has until July 2 to sign, veto or let the bills become law without his signature.
