MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – Groundbreaking for the long-awaited Miramar Police Headquarters got underway Wednesday.

The headquarters, a 65,000-square-foot building, is located at the Miramar Town Center.

Displaced since Hurricane Wilma, which hit South Florida in 2005, the newly constructed headquarters will also house the City's Emergency Operations Center.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of our upcoming ground breaking ceremony for the construction of our new police headquarters," Miramar Police Chief Raymond Black said in a statement. With the headquarters central location, Chief Black said, "this facility will serve the interests of our community and support the daily operations of our police department for many generations."

The new building, with retail shops and restaurants, will be of mixed-use.
